AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines (J2), the national flag carrier and largest airline of Azerbaijan, was founded on April 7, 1992, following the country's independence from the Soviet Union. Headquartered at Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), AZAL has grown into a key player in Eurasian aviation, operating a modern fleet of around 30-36 aircraft to over 50 destinations across Europe, Asia, the CIS, and the Middle East.
Emerging from the remnants of Aeroflot operations, AZAL quickly modernized its fleet, transitioning from Soviet-era aircraft like the Tu-154 to Western jets such as Boeing 757s and Airbus A320s in the 1990s and 2000s. It offers full-service flights in Economy, Premium Economy, and Business classes, complete with in-flight entertainment, complimentary meals, and the AZAL Miles loyalty program. The airline previously ran a low-cost subsidiary, Buta Airways (merged back in 2023), highlighting its hybrid approach while maintaining premium standards on mainline routes.
AZAL's network emphasizes connectivity from its Baku hub, with long-haul services via Boeing 767-300ERs and 787-8 Dreamliners to destinations like London, Beijing, and Delhi, alongside short-haul Embraer E190s and Airbus narrowbodies for regional routes. Distinctive achievements include Skytrax 4-Star certification and awards as 'Best Regional Airline in Central Asia and CIS' in 2022 and 2024. Amid fleet renewal plans adding over 30 new Airbus and Boeing aircraft by 2032, AZAL focuses on sustainability, safety (7/7 AirlineRatings), and expanding to new markets like Seoul and Karabakh. As Azerbaijan's aviation ambassador, it bridges East and West with reliable service and cultural hospitality.
