About Daallo Airlines

Daallo Airlines (D3) is a Somali-owned regional carrier headquartered in Dubai, UAE, specializing in flights across the Horn of Africa, East Africa, and the Middle East. Founded in 1991 by Mohammed Ibrahim Yassin Olad in Djibouti, it began operations with a single Cessna Caravan on the Djibouti-Hargeisa route amid Somalia's civil war challenges. Over three decades, Daallo has grown into a key player for underserved markets, operating passenger, cargo, and charter services.

In 2015, it merged with Jubba Airways under the African Airways Alliance holding company, enhancing its network while retaining independent branding. Today, from its primary hub at Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) in Mogadishu, it connects nine destinations including Nairobi (NBO), Jeddah (JED), Dubai (DXB), Hargeisa (HGA), Bosaso (BSA), and Garowe. Its fleet of four aircraft—1 Boeing 737-300, 2 Boeing 737-400s, and 1 Bombardier Q400—supports efficient short- to medium-haul operations, though with an average age of 26 years.

Daallo stands out for bridging conflict-affected regions, providing vital links for Somali diaspora, business travelers, and pilgrims. However, it faces scrutiny: banned from EU airspace due to safety concerns, including a 2016 onboard bomb explosion on Flight 159 claimed by Al-Shabaab. Passenger feedback averages around 3/5 on sites like TripAdvisor (from limited reviews), praising crew friendliness but criticizing entertainment, delays, and service inconsistencies. As a hybrid carrier blending scheduled full-service elements with charters, Daallo continues fleet expansion ambitions, eyeing more 737-800s and Dash 8-300s to bolster regional dominance.
