Flybmi: The Regional Specialist That Soared and Fell
Flybmi, legally British Midland Regional Limited, traced its roots to 14 May 1987 when it launched as Business Air, initially flying Saab 340 turboprops on feeder routes for British Midland International (BMI) from Manchester. Acquired by BMI in 1996, it evolved into British Midland Commuter (1998) and bmi Regional (2001), becoming a key Star Alliance affiliate until 2012. Post-BMI's sale to IAG, it gained independence under Sector Aviation Holdings, shifting headquarters to East Midlands Airport (EMA) and expanding via codeshares with Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines.
Rebranded flybmi in July 2018, it operated an all-Embraer jet fleet from bases including EMA, Aberdeen (ABZ), Bristol (BRS), and Munich (MUC), serving 23 UK and European destinations. Known for punctuality—named UK's most on-time airline nine years running—it offered distinctive services like Airbus staff shuttles between UK factories and Toulouse, plus holiday charters to Bastia and Verona. Its point-to-point network linked secondary cities, filling gaps left by majors.
Despite awards and partnerships, flybmi succumbed to rising fuel costs, Brexit uncertainty, and low load factors (average 18 passengers/flight), ceasing operations on 16 February 2019. Its 17 aircraft were dispersed, routes absorbed by Loganair and others. Flybmi exemplified resilient regional aviation, blending scheduled services, wet-leasing, and charters in a niche market.
