About Galeyr Airline

Galeyr Airline: Somalia's Short-Lived Regional Carrier

Galeyr Airline (IATA: G2), a Somali regional airline founded in 2014, aimed to connect underserved communities within Somalia from its base at Mogadishu Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ). Headquartered in Mogadishu, the carrier focused on domestic short-haul routes to key destinations like Abudwak, Adado, Baidoa, Beledweyne, Dhusamareb, Dolow, Guriel, and Kismayo. Operating as a commuter service in one of the world's most challenging aviation markets, Galeyr provided essential connectivity amid Somalia's complex security and infrastructure landscape.

The airline's operations were modest, utilizing a small fleet including at least one Let L-410 Turbolet (registration UR-VTV), suited for rugged airstrips and short regional hops. However, Galeyr faced significant hurdles typical of Somali aviation, including political instability and limited resources. A notable ground incident in January 2018 at Mogadishu involved its L-410 colliding with an Embraer EMB-120, highlighting operational risks, though no fatalities occurred.

By around 2019, Galeyr ceased operations, joining a list of defunct Somali carriers. Its official website and social media have been dormant for years, with no recent activity. Despite its brief existence, Galeyr represented efforts to bolster intra-Somali air travel. Today, it serves as a historical footnote in African aviation, underscoring the resilience required for regional airlines in fragile states. No passenger reviews are available on major platforms like Skytrax or TripAdvisor, reflecting its niche operations and short lifespan.

Key Facts: Defunct since ~2019, no alliance membership, low-cost regional model.
