IrAero: Bridging Russia's Remote Regions

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Irkutsk, Russia, IrAero has grown into a key regional carrier connecting Siberia's vast wilderness with major cities and international gateways. Based primarily at Irkutsk International Airport (IKT), it operates secondary hubs in Yakutsk (YKS), Magadan (GDX), and Moscow, facilitating access to around 60 destinations. These include domestic routes to Sochi, Orenburg, Khabarovsk, Chita, and Tomsk, alongside international flights to Baku (Azerbaijan), Beijing and Sanya (China), Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), Istanbul and Antalya (Turkey), and Nha Trang (Vietnam).

Initially focused on cargo in the Far East, IrAero pivoted to passenger services in 2006, blending scheduled flights, charters, and freight. A notable milestone was becoming the launch customer for the Yakovlev MC-21-300 in 2013, ordering 10 units (deliveries pending). Its fleet emphasizes efficiency on short-haul routes with Russian-developed aircraft like the Sukhoi Superjet 100. Despite a 2011 runway excursion incident with no fatalities, safety remains prioritized.

As a hybrid carrier offering full-service elements on select routes alongside charters, IrAero stands out for its resilience in serving underserved Siberian areas. Passenger feedback highlights reliable crew service but notes room for improvement in punctuality, amenities, and infrastructure—typical for regional operations amid Russia's challenging geography. With an average fleet age of 13.7 years and ongoing modernization, IrAero continues to play a crucial role in regional connectivity.
