Founded on January 23, 2008, as a subsidiary of Korean Air, Jin Air emerged as South Korea's second-largest low-cost carrier (LCC). Headquartered in Seoul's Gangseo-gu, it commenced operations in April 2008 with domestic flights from Gimpo International Airport (GMP), quickly expanding to international routes starting with Bangkok in December 2009. A pioneer in the region, Jin Air introduced Korea's first widebody LCC service with Boeing 777-200ERs to Honolulu in 2015, alongside efficient narrowbody operations.

Operating primarily from hubs at Gimpo (GMP) and Incheon (ICN), Jin Air connects to 6 domestic cities like Busan and 26 international destinations across Japan, China, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines), Guam, Taiwan, Mongolia, Laos, Malaysia, and the US. Its network focuses on leisure travel, charters, and cargo services launched in 2013. In 2018, it transported 3.5 million domestic and 5.4 million international passengers, securing 11% and 6% market shares respectively.

What sets Jin Air apart is its all-Boeing fleet of 31 aircraft (average age 13.9 years), blending high-capacity 777s (393 seats with business class) for long-haul charters and modern 737-800/900/MAX 8s (180-189 seats) for short/medium-haul efficiency. Certified as a 3-Star Low-Cost Airline by Skytrax, it earns praise for affordability, punctuality (96% on-time), and friendly crew, though passengers note tighter seats and basic amenities typical of LCCs.

Recent strategic moves include an IPO in 2017 and plans to absorb Air Busan and Air Seoul under the Jin Air brand following Korean Air's Asiana merger, poised for expanded dominance in Asia-Pacific aviation.
