About MASwings

MASwings: East Malaysia's Regional Lifeline

MASwings, established on October 1, 2007, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), has long been the vital connector for remote communities in Sabah and Sarawak, East Malaysia. Tasked with operating subsidized Rural Air Services (RAS) under government contracts, it links over 20 destinations, including challenging airstrips like Ba'kelalan, Bario, and Mulu, using efficient turboprop aircraft ideal for short, rugged runways.

Headquartered initially in Kota Kinabalu and later shifted to Kuching following its acquisition by the Sarawak state government in January 2025, MASwings played a crucial role in regional connectivity within the BIMP-EAGA framework. Its network focused on domestic intra-East Malaysia routes, with past extensions to Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines—most discontinued post-COVID. Known for no-frills service on brief hops, passengers praise the simplicity and friendly crew but note basic amenities, limited entertainment, and snacks over meals.

The fleet comprised 8 ATR 72-500s for higher-capacity short-haul and 6 DHC-6-400 Twin Otters for low-volume rural ops, averaging around 17 years old. Safety remains a strong suit (7/7 on AirlineRatings), though passenger feedback averages modest scores amid sparse reviews.

In a pivotal shift, Sarawak's purchase for RM270 million marked independence from MAG, leading to rebranding as AirBorneo in early 2026 while retaining the 'MY' IATA code and fleet. New ATR 42/72-600 orders signal modernization. Distinctive for its PSO commitment, MASwings epitomized accessible aviation in Borneo's interiors, blending reliability with community service.
