Thai Smile Airways: Thailand's Friendly Regional Flyer
Launched in 2012 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Thai Airways International, Thai Smile Airways filled the niche between ultra-low-cost carriers and full-service airlines. Headquartered in Bangkok, it operated from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) as its main hub, with Chiang Mai (CNX) as a key focus city. The airline's name, chosen from a public contest, embodied its signature 'smile' service—warm Thai hospitality at affordable prices.
Initially boasting an extensive Asian network, Thai Smile connected Bangkok to destinations like Hong Kong, Singapore, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chinese cities such as Chongqing and Kunming. By 2023, amid post-COVID challenges, it pivoted to domestic routes including Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai, and Ubon Ratchathani, serving Thailand's vibrant tourism hubs.
As a Star Alliance Connecting Partner, passengers earned Royal Orchid Plus miles. Its fleet of 12 Airbus A320-200s offered configurations with Smile Plus premium seats (12 business-class style) and economy, praised for comfort on short-haul flights. Complimentary meals, entertainment-free cabins, and efficient service earned high marks from passengers on Skytrax (7/10) and TripAdvisor (4.5/5).
In 2023, Thai Smile merged into Thai Airways effective January 1, 2024, integrating its fleet and operations to streamline the group. Though no longer independent, its legacy endures in Thai's regional services, delivering value, smiles, and reliability.
