TransNusa, headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, traces its roots to August 2005 when it launched as a regional airline serving eastern Indonesia from Kupang with chartered aircraft. It earned its Air Operator's Certificate in 2011 and expanded with ATR turboprops before suspending operations in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Backed by China Aircraft Leasing Group (a subsidiary of China Everbright Group), TransNusa relaunched in October 2022 as a low-cost carrier, inaugurating Jakarta-Denpasar services with modern Airbus A320neos and pioneering Comac ARJ21 regional jets—making it the first foreign operator of China's homegrown aircraft.
Under new ownership, the airline swiftly evolved its business model: from low-cost to full-service in 2024, premium service carrier, and by April 2025, a 'medium service carrier' offering complimentary light snacks, baggage allowances on domestic flights, and buy-on-board menus. This hybrid approach balances affordability with enhanced passenger experience, distinguishing TransNusa in Indonesia's competitive market.
Operating a fleet of 13 aircraft—including five A320-200s, two A321-200s, and six Comac ARJ21s—TransNusa connects 12 destinations across Indonesia, Australia (Darwin, Perth), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang), Singapore, and charter routes to China (Guiyang, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen). Primary hub at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), with secondary at Ngurah Rai (DPS), it focuses on underserved eastern Indonesia routes while expanding internationally.
What sets TransNusa apart is its Sino-Indonesian partnership, enabling access to advanced Comac technology and fueling ambitious growth: 25 ARJ21 orders pending, new routes like Denpasar-Perth (2025), and domestic expansions. Despite mixed passenger reviews citing delays, it offers value-driven travel with improving service standards, positioning itself as a nimble player bridging Indonesia's archipelago.
