Turkmenistan Airlines, founded on 4 May 1992 as the flag carrier of Turkmenistan, emerged from the post-Soviet era as the nation's sole airline, headquartered in Ashgabat. Initially operating Soviet-era aircraft like the Tupolev Tu-154 and Yakovlev Yak-40, it modernized rapidly by acquiring the first Boeing 737-300 in the former USSR and introducing Boeing 717s in 2001. The fleet evolved through Boeing 737s and 757s, with long-haul expansion via Boeing 777-200LRs in 2014 to destinations like Bangkok and Istanbul. Reorganized into an open joint-stock company in 2017, it faced challenges including a 2019 EASA suspension of EU flights (lifted after 10 months) and a full suspension of international passenger services in 2020 due to COVID-19, redirecting operations to secondary hubs like Turkmenabat. Recovery involved resuming flights from 2022, adding cargo Airbus A330-200P2Fs in 2023—the first in Central Asia—and Boeing 777-300ERs for long-haul routes.
Unique features include its government ownership ensuring monopoly status, operation of VIP aircraft (including the world's last Boeing 777-200LR), complimentary in-flight services, a quarterly in-flight magazine Lachyn, a transit hotel, stopover programs for domestic connections, and free AdonisOne entertainment/Wi-Fi since 2024. Operating from Ashgabat (ASB) hub to 5 domestic and 14 international destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, it bridges Central Asia with global networks while emphasizing safety, modern Boeing fleet, and cultural hospitality.
